These scenarios demand new consideration and raise the question of whether today’s mobility is fit for the future. Lack of sufficient parking, traffic jams and pollution are daily problems in city life.
Taking the stress out of mobility in the future means reducing traffic levels. Potential ways to address this issue would be to turn to exclusively clean and safe transportation solutions, to merge housing developments with industrial areas – thus avoiding unnecessary journeys – and to foster the use of intermodal transportation. After all, residents in metropolitan areas increasingly wish for stress-free solutions to get from A to B.
The way to relaxed urban mobility is an intelligent, connected infrastructure. A number of intermodal mobility solutions would allow commuters to simply use whichever mode of transportation is available at the time. Smart connectivity ensures that users always find a suitable solution, regardless of time or location. Bosch connected services already provide road users with unprecedented levels of flexibility today.
Automated driving significantly improves driver comfort and drastically reduces stress levels. But most importantly, it increases safety on the roads. Bosch has a clear vision: make urban mobility accident-free to the greatest extent possible. In cities such as Stockholm, Tokyo and Berlin, there are 3-5 road fatalities for every 100,000 inhabitants. In Jaipur, Guadalajara, or Curitiba, this figure increases to 15-35, which is reflective of the impact modern infrastructure and better-equipped vehicles can have on urban road safety.
Given that nine out of ten accidents are caused by human error, automation can play a major role in improving road traffic safety. Current Bosch accident research studies indicate that automated solutions could cut accidents by approximately one third.1 With its many solutions – driver assistance systems or innovative parking, for instance – Bosch is taking the next step towards a future of virtually accident-free mobility.

to make all drivetrains fit for the future
When it comes to keeping big cities clean, clean air is an absolute priority. But there are many options for cutting emission levels. One is to expand electromobility. Given that a significant proportion of urban transport will be electrically powered in the future, Bosch is pulling out all the stops to drive this development forward.
But conventional powertrains also remain viable options in the years to come. As in-depth research indicates, diesel and gasoline engines have major optimization potential. The combustion engine itself may be converted to run on synthetic fuel produced using renewable energy (e-fuels), which would make it resource-conserving and CO2 neutral.
Making emissions-free mobility a reality calls for multi-dimensional thinking. For this reason, Bosch is exploring many avenues so as to get there as quickly as possible.
